New Management at Greenwich Market

Fresh for 2010, Greenwich Market has a new management team.

The historic market, which has operated on the same spot since 1700 - and has a charter to run for 1,000 years - is now run by an in-house team at Greenwich Hospital, the naval charity which also owns the site and surrounding shops.

Martin Sands, Director of Greenwich Hospital commented: "We are looking forward to working with all market stall holders to make Greenwich Market an even better place to visit. We are excited about the opportunities that this change in management will bring, and anticipate the stalls and surrounding shops working even more closely together to create a vibrant and genuinely unique retail destination."

Existing opening hours and daily specialties are set to stay the same with the new management looking into some exciting ideas for using the space on Mondays and Tuesdays (the two days when market traders aren't present) to complement the permanent shops.

Greenwich Market and Turnpin Lane are home to nearly 30 shops - all of them independents - and two famous pubs, the Admiral Hardy and the Coach and Horses, plus up to 150 stalls on market days with weekends the busiest.

The market has come to be well known for its arts, crafts and collectables offer and is home to many talented fashion designers, ceramicists, photographers and jewellers. Also on offer is a wide variety of excellent world street food - credited by Time Out as the best in London.

Martin Sands added: "Each stallholder has their own inspiring story - several entrepreneurs have started out on the market before progressing to shops - such as the teams at Lush Designs, Beauty and the Bib, Arty Globe, Emma Nissim and Dao. We're a very diverse community with a dozen nationalities represented and a wide range of ages - some stallholders are in their teens and one regular is in his seventies. We even have two traders celebrating 25 years on the market this year!"

Greenwich Market appeared as the backdrop for a challenge on the last series of The Apprentice and the covered market setting is available for filming.
