Arty Globe opens in Greenwich Market

Greenwich Market this week saw the opening of ‘Arty Globe by Hartwig Braun’ next door to Dao.
Arty Globe is the creation of architect-cum-artist Hartwig Braun and his business partner Isaac Lilos. Hartwig hand-draws highly accurate, colourful and very complex illustrations of major cities of the world including London, New York and Paris, as if seen through a fish eye lens, using no computer wizardry but just bird’s eye view pictures, city maps and his knowledge gained from pacing the streets. Hartwig, from Germany, says: “I’ve always had a passion for the metropolis but didn’t ever think I’d become an artist – not until Isaac spotted a small drawing I did of Amsterdam and realised I had a talent for creating these detailed cityscapes.”
In addition to prints in a range of sizes and colourways (available framed and unframed), Arty Globe sells a variety of merchandise such as notebooks, t-shirts, tea towels, coasters (their biggest seller) and jigsaws. Isaac commented: “Our journey to date has been really amazing. We started the venture just eight months ago and then in September 2008 we took a stall on Greenwich Market to test Hartwig’s creations. We had an overwhelming response – our customers ranged from young children to ladies in their 70s! It’s also been great to see that we not only appeal to tourists looking for a classy, good quality souvenir but to Londoners too, in fact it is Londoners who are our biggest customers, which we take as a real compliment.”
Arty Globe’s appeal is underlined by the bespoke commissions it has already undertaken for the London Eye (Arty Globe is the only illustration-based image of the Eye on sale at its souvenir shop), the British Museum and Hamley’s. Hartwig is also busy creating an image of Greenwich featuring all of its iconic landmarks – more information to be unveiled soon!
