Eating and drinking in Greenwich

'A false balance is abomination to the Lord but a just weight
is his delight'

...is the motto inscribed above one of the archways leading into the market. Turns out it's a quote from Proverbs and dates back to 1837 when Greenwich Market was dedicated to selling fruit and vegetables.

As it happens, thinking about weight, my favourite motto is from Miss Piggy. She wisely counsels us to 'Never eat more than you can lift' and this is well worth bearing in mind when visiting Greenwich town centre today because you will be greatly tempted by the variety of food on offer.

From mouthwatering sandwiches and cakes at Rhodes Bakery and delicious snacks at the Bar du Musee deli, to something more substantial at the Bar du Musee restaurant (which has an ace new chef on board) or at Greenwich Park Bar and Grill with its lovely views towards the park, there is so much choice. Nelson Road is home to a host of eateries from Noodle Time to Mambo Latino, and Greenwich even has a fine dining option with the glorious Spread Eagle on Stockwell Street.

There are some great value chains too such as Cafe Rouge and Pizza Express, and plenty of pubs serving up good English grub. So whether you fancy whitebait at the famous Thameside Trafalgar Tavern, steak and Meantime London Stout pie at the Greenwich Union, a tasty Indian at Mogul or romantic Italian at La Cucina di Soteri, Greenwich is the place to eat.
